Understand what you can do as a family member to prevent alcohol misuse.

Preventing Alcohol Misuse

While visiting prospective colleges, be prepared to ask college administrators about their alcohol and other drug abuse prevention policies and programs. Even after your child is off at school, you can play an active role in preventing substance misuse. You can be a positive and powerful influence on your student to make proper choices that promote health, safety, and academic success. We suggest for parents and families:

  • Try joining a campus and community coalition, a campus alcohol task group, or parent organization.
  • Stay involved to ensure healthy decision-making.
  • Phone calls and e-mails, especially during the first few weeks on campus (and easy way to make an impact when students are most vulnerable for making high-risk decisions).
