Psychedelic use in the U.S. is increasing across therapeutic, spiritual, and recreational contexts, resulting in more individuals presenting to behavioral health and crisis services. However, the workforce often lacks training to respond effectively using evidence based, harm reduction, and trauma informed approaches. Dr. Armstrong presents the Psychedelic Emergency, Acute, and Continuing Care Education (P.E.A.C.E.) Program, a statewide workforce development initiative. Presenters will review current research on psychedelic mechanisms and clinical applications, trends in use nationally and in Ohio, and core principles for distinguishing psychedelic related crises from psychiatric conditions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe current trends in psychedelic use and the implications for behavioral health and addiction services systems.
  • Explain the rationale, structure, and early outcomes of the P.E.A.C.E. Program as a model for workforce development addressing psychedelic-related crises.
  • Describe elements of a harm-reduction informed psychedelic crisis response and continuing care.
  • Explain the differences between psychedelic crisis and schizophrenia spectrum symptoms.
  • Identify factors that increase the likelihood and difficulty of a challenging psychedelic experience.
