Along with entering adulthood comes exploration in many aspects of life, such as identity construction, growing independence, work, and romantic relationships. College is a time that brings many challenges due to its academic component, as well as new social conditions. Risky alcohol use is a significant health concern among college students. Risky alcohol use is linked to negative drinking consequences such as hangovers, blackouts, alcohol poisoning, and even death. Romantic relationships are a significant component of personal development, social support, and one’s well-being. Alcohol use and romantic relationships occur rapidly during the first year of college. This study aims to examine the correlations between past years of risky alcohol use and romantic relationships among first-year college students and at one-year follow-up, adjusting for mental health problems.

This study’s data was taken from the French section of the World Mental Health International College Student Survey initiative. Data collection took place from October to May for two consecutive academic years. A total of 1,624 participants completed an online survey, and 727 completed the second survey during a one-year follow-up. Risky alcohol use, current romantic relationship status, lifetime mental disorders, and sociodemographics were all measured throughout this study.

Results of this study showed a significant cross-sectional association between risky alcohol use and dating in comparison to not dating, especially those with unsteady relationships. There was not a significant correlation found between unsteady relationships and lifetime mental disorders. This study helps expand knowledge on the association between excessive drinking and romantic relationship patterns among college students. This study also suggests that education on alcohol-related risks, well-being, and mental and relationship health could be very beneficial for college students.

Takeaway: Results of this study showed a significant cross-sectional association between risky alcohol use and dating in comparison to not dating, especially those with unsteady relationships.
