There has been growing concern for student mental health. According to the World Mental Health Organization, roughly 450 million individuals have a mental disorder. The transition from high school to university is fun and exciting, but many young adults face challenges. College students experience more mental health issues than the general public. These mental health issues consist of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, risk of suicide, usage of psychiatric drugs, and other chronic psychiatric disease.

This study is a comprehensive review that aims to understand the influence of external factors such as low alcohol prices, advertising, and the significant number of effects that substance misuse can inflict on the academic and personal lives of university students. According to recent studies, low alcohol prices, advertising, and easy availability were linked to higher binge drinking rates on college campuses. Those who engage in heavy episodic drinking more frequently had higher rates of alcohol-related problems, such as health risks and negative mental health consequences. College students are more likely to deal with alcohol use disorders than young adults of the same age not in college. Drug misuse among college students is increasing at a rapid rate.

Social media platforms have a tremendous influence on college students. Studies have shown that social media has an impact on not only the quantity but also the quality of alcohol intake among college students. This study suggests that a multidisciplinary approach would be beneficial to use at university campuses to prevent and treat substance misuse. An interdisciplinary approach can positively affect one’s quality of life, mental health, and academic performance.

Takeaway: This study suggests that a multidisciplinary approach would be beneficial to use at university campuses to prevent and treat substance misuse due to its ability to positively affect one’s quality of life, mental health, and academic performance.
