The Allure of the Juul

In recent years, cigarette smoking has declined in the United States. However, there has been a staggering increase in tobacco use among teens and young adults in the form of e-cigarettes. Young adults find e-cigarettes, particularly the Juul, appealing as they are available in various flavors, are discreet, and are thought to be safer than traditional cigarettes.

The Juul is increasingly popular among young adults and college students, and little research exists on this particular product. Recently, the Academy of General Dentistry published a paper geared towards the health effects that they and other providers could prevent by being knowledgeable on e-cigarette/Juul use among young adults.

The amount of nicotine in one Juul cartridge is equivalent to a pack of cigarettes. Therefore, many young adults who use the Juul consume very high amounts of nicotine, which can have effects on their developing brains that make abstaining from nicotine difficult. It can also lead to reduced impulse control and cognitive and attention disorders. It has also been found that young adults who use e-cigarettes are likely to begin using cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Because these products are so easy to access and are seen as safe and normal among young adults, it is important for healthcare providers to be aware of the effects of use as well as to be prepared to have discussions with adolescents, their parents, and young adults.

Take Away: E-cigarettes like the Juul are increasingly popular among adolescents and young adults. Because of the high nicotine content, it is important that healthcare providers are able to make young adults aware of the risks of e-cigarette use.
