The transition to college is a time for young adults to explore independent living and self-care. During this time period young adults may also engage in risk behaviors such alcohol and drug use, which can increase the possibility of experiencing adverse outcomes. One risk behavior known as binge drinking, having 4-5 drinks in a 2 hour time frame, has been shown to be more detrimental to college women than men. According to the American College Heath Association, binge drinking can increase college women’s’ risk of being diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and having unprotected sex. This study examines the influence of pre-college behaviors and parenting practices on alcohol use and sexual risk taking among first-year college women.

The study’s sample consisted of 229 female first year college students who completed an online survey. Participants were asked to report pre-college alcohol use, current alcohol use, sexual behaviors, and experiences with intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual violence (SV), or intimidation. Participants were also asked to describe parental closeness and communication with parents about sexual risks, personal safety, and danger. Data was analyzed using logistic regression models to assess for relationships between variables.

Results of the data analysis showed that students who consumed alcohol were more likely to not be the only child in college, were more likely to have their parents provide them with alcohol, and were more likely to have consumed alcohol at least once per month in high school. Pre-college drinking was associated with a greater likelihood of binge drinking. Parental closeness and  communication with parents about sexual risks, personal safety, and danger was associated with less likelihood of regretting doing something while drinking, experiencing sexual violence, and having sex without a condom.

Takeaway: Pre-college behaviors and parenting practices may influence alcohol use and sexual risking taking in first-year college women.
